I ran into Gary Reeves (the guy in the pink shirt) at Tom Wood Aviation (KUMP) and won a free Single Pilot IFR Mastery online course! Thanks Gary!

By the way, I've recently started following Gary have thoroughly enjoyed watching his webinars and talks whenever he has them. He offers loads of useful information for any pilot aspiring to go the extra mile.

There’s one tip of his that I use all the time while flying IFR and it’s helped me stay ahead of the airplane (and impress my instructor and checkride examiner). It’s quite simple too, just annotate each approach plate before the flight in a specific manner so that you maintain situational awareness. In fact, I spent some time and annotated every single approach in the area I usually fly so that all I had to do before taking off was checking for any NOTAMs and I was all set.

Here's an example of one of my approach plates:

While I’ve modified Gary’s method slightly for my own personal preference, I recommend watching his video explaining things.

Gary’s tips have really helped with how I use ForeFlight and fly IFR and I highly recommend checking him out. Here are a few specific videos to get you started:
